Important changes for Saratoga Springs 2016

Dear Colleagues,

The 20th Saratoga Springs Primary Eye Care Conference 2016 is coming very soon. There are some new and exciting changes that we wish to inform you of so that you get the most out of the meeting.  Changes are posted on web site, , also.

Firstly, my very good friend, Gary Oliver, was looking at back surgery so he graciously begged off speaking this year.  He is slowly recuperating.

Fortunately, Jerry Sherman agreed to fill in for him on Monday with exciting new talks. I can’t thank him enough. Nate Lighthizer, Assistant Dean of Clinical Care Service at the Northeastern State University College of Optometry in Oklahoma, has agreed to fly in earlier to cover Gary’s lecture on Saturday.  I have seen Nate lecture and each of you will thank me for inviting him to Saratoga after hearing this brilliant young man speak.

Regeneron (Diamond sponsor) will be hosting a breakfast seminar on new information on diabetic edema on Sunday, April 3rd at the Saratoga Springs, Holiday Inn, from 7:00 – 8:00 AM. The speakers will be Mark Dunbar, OD from Bascom Palmer and Rishi Singh, MD from the Cleveland Clinic. As these are top national speakers and the topic so timely, we will move this lecture from the restaurant into the lecture hall. Please let us know if you plan to attend.

Several companies are hosting informational dinners on Sunday night, April 3rd, after the cocktail reception in the exhibit hall. This will be very convenient for those of us who are away from our families and would like a free meal and some free information.

  • Vision Source (Platinum sponsor) is hosting a dinner meeting at the Inn at Saratoga, starting at 6:15 PM.  Essilor (platinum sponsor), Marco (Gold sponsor) and Bausch and Lomb (Diamond sponsor) are sponsoring this event. It is open to all Vision Source members and I would like to invite any of you who would like to learn more about Vision Source and our alliance with Capital District Physician’s Health Plan, Mohawk Valley Physician’s Health Plan, CapitalCare, and Blue Shield of Northeastern New York. Contact me by e-mail if you wish to attend as soon as you can as we are nearing maximum capacity.
  • Reichert Technologies (Gold sponsor) will host a dinner at 6:30 PM at Chianti Il Ristorante, 18 Division St.,.with speaker Jim Thimons. Jim is one of the most prolific and sought after speakers in the country.
  • RevolutionEHR (Gold Sponsor) Mouzan House at 1 Yale Street in Saratoga Springs at 6:30 PM

Konan Medical (Gold Sponsor)  Dr. Paul Karpecki said ‘Konan..‘has become the ‘Mac’ of ophthalmic technology and has once again done it with VEP and ERG testing.”

We are indeed proud to offer the Next Generation EvokeDx, an alternative to the older style technology.Konan is hosting a casual dinner at the upscale Jacob and Anthony’s Restaurant in downtown Saratoga Springs beginning at 6:30PM, Sunday April 3. Visit Phil Dupont or Ian McMillan at the Konan exhibit booth for details.

  • Vermont doctors may attend any talk but due to Vermont state law, they must pay for their own meals.

Our schedule is packed with great courses, speakers and additional information. We will start the meeting at 8:20 AM on Sunday morning so that we can get the announcements in so as not to rush the speakers by taking up their time for housekeeping issues.  Renee Goldaermann, MS,RN, NE-BC., Vice President Heath Care Quality, CDPHP will speak at 1:10 PM on Sunday regarding the diabetic initiative that she and I have been working on for the past 6 months.

Please try to be in your seats at the proper times as we are reviewed by COPE that we stick to CE guidelines.  Please let me know who will be attending the scleral lens workshop so that we have enough supplies and slit lamps.

I am putting together a rolling PowerPoint of announcements that will be run during breaks and lunch. If you have any information such as, “associate needed”, “practice for sale” or “equipment for sale”, please let me know ASAP.

I would, also, like you all to know that Vision Service Plan has provided a $3,000 educational grant which was crucial for us to recruit the quality of speakers  that you will be hearing this year. I want to highlight their support.

The New York State low vision specialist is going on-line for everyone to be kept aware of their status in the process. We are trying to reduce errors and keep everyone up to date in their CE requirements. Those requirements are;

5 hours of CE directly related to low vision. Continuing education on specific diseases is not allowed i.e. new treatments on age related macular degenration. Each CE period is the same for each doctor to avoid confusion. Each period goes from Jan 1-st of an even year and ends on the last day of an odd year. For example, 1/1/12 to 12/31/13. As the list was in confusion and so many doctors did not fulfill their requirement for 1/1/10 to 12/31/11, we extended the previous period until Oct 2012. This does not complete the requirement for the present period.

Your choices for CE are:
1. Vision Expo East- 3/16/13 4 hrs CE Dr Lynn Noon and Richard Soden
2. Saratoga Springs- 4/20/13 2nd draft brochure attached
3. Minneapolis, MN Envision Conference 9/19-21/13
4. SUNY Envision  10/19-21/13
5. Seattle- AAO 10/23-26/13
6. Vision Expo West 10/2-5/13 no information available at this time
There will be more to come.
